This seminar will cover the evolution of coke making from the primitive to the 21st Century. After describing important processes that dot the coke making landscape, criteria for plant selection or evaluation will be discussed in detail. At the end of the course, one will be well versed with evolution of different coke making technologies and equipped with tools to select a coke plant or to evaluate a coke plant.
About your instructor:
Joel Sundholm earned a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Cornell University in 1963. He retired from LTV Steel in 2002 after 38 years with LTV and its predecessor company Jones and Laughlin Steel serving as a construction engineer, cokemaking senior project engineer, senior development engineer for corporate cokemaking and environmental engineer. He holds a professional engineer's license from the Commonwealth of PA and is a member the Eastern State Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Assn, a Fellow Member of the Coke Oven Manager's Association, and a life member of the Association of Iron and Steel Technology formed by the jointure of the AISE and ISS. He has chaired the Mechanical and Welding Committee and the Coke Oven Producing Committee of the AISE and served on the AISE board of directors. He chaired the AISI Tall Oven Group which conducted coke oven wall movement studies. He has authored technical papers on coke oven design and operation, repair techniques, and environmental control. In 2009 he was awarded the Joseph Becker Award for distinguished achievements on coal carbonization and coal technology. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Sundholm has been an active volunteer - serving as President of the Cornell Club of Pittsburgh and serving as Chair of the Board of Management of the North Boroughs branch of the YCMA of Pittsburgh. In 1983 he was named volunteer of the year by the YMCA of Pittsburgh. He currently is the treasurer of the Hudson Service Unit of the Summit County, OH.
